The Dune: an evolving natural environment
The Lungomare Pionieri del Turismo promenade renovation and reconstruction project in Milano Marittima has opted to preserve its environment, leaving it to its natural evolution and making it accessible through a larch-wood walkways system.
At first glance, it might look like a neglected area, in reality it will be extremely interesting to evaluate, in the next years, which spontaneous herbaceous plants and shrubs have adapted and how they have thrived next to the tamarisks.
At the same time, dune systems represent a natural bank in case of high tide, a protection for the backside beach as well as a sand storage that can feed the beach and partly mitigate the erosion effects, in addition to being high-value landscapes and environmental niches.
Hence the importance of the conservation and enhancement of these areas, whose good condition fosters the growth of the neighbouring sites.
Sadly, dune systems suffer from several issues caused by erosion stress and strong human pressure that make them constantly disappear - in particular along the Romagna coast.
In Cervia there are two other endangered natural dunes, one along the northern part of the beach close to the Colonia Varese building in Milano Marittima, and another inside Milano Marittima pinewood accessible from via Jelenia Góra. Both are included in SIC-ZPS areas.
