The Varese Colonia Dune
The dune, which falls within the perimeter of the Special Area of Conservation ZSC IT 4070008 Pineta di Cervia of the Parco del Delta del Po Emilia - Romagna, represents one of the very few living dunes left on the north Adriatic coastline and is home to important plant species, true floral emergencies.
In September 2024, the first interventions to safeguard the dune located at Colonia Varese, on municipal property, were completed.
The interventions included the grounding of a system of chestnut piles joined by a double warp of natural, salt-resistant ropes, aimed at preventing access to the dune itself, as well as the provision of special monitoring and information signs.
In addition to these initial interventions, a naturalistic study is also underway to collect scientific information on the state of consistency and conservation of the actual vegetation and habitats present and to receive design and technical-economic indications on how to enhance the vegetation of the dune and backdune habitats.
Two other natural dune relicts exist in Cervia, along the Milano Marittima seafront and within the Milano Marittima pine forest.
