The area you are passing through represents the centre of pine forest renewal.
Following the devastation caused by the waterspout, which uprooted more than 5,000 trees, the Municipality of Cervia intervened with the immediate reforestation of a large part of the area.
From 2020 to 2022, more than 1,700 developed plants and approximately 9,400 forest seedlings were planted.
A regular planting pattern was adopted, arranging the plants at 3 m spacing.
The tree species used include both Mediterranean evergreen plants such as:
that deciduous plants belonging to less Mediterranean habitats were in fact already present in the oldest pine forest such as:
The dynamism of nature will trigger evolutionary processes that will first lead to herbaceous cover, then to the formation of shrub patches that will weave an increasingly compact layer.
In the meantime, trees will grow and the shading of their crowns will select herbaceous species that will gradually reduce their area.
Over the course of some 50 years, the forest will reach maturity and evolutionary stability.
The new plantings include as many as three different species of oak.
From the profile of the leaf margin and the shape of the acorn, it is possible to distinguish one species from the other.
Observe the drawing, and try to recognise them.
