The legend of Our Lady of the pine
According to the legend, a worker who was looking for firewood noticed a painting of the Virgin hanging from a pine. He ran back to Cervia and spread the news of the miracle. The local clergy, the authorities and the people went to the wood, found the painting and carried it in procession to the Cathedral to be displayed to the public for veneration.
The next morning, however, the painting had mysteriously disappeared and was found on the pine. When taken back to town for the second time, it went back again to the pine.
Then the people in Cervia understood the Virgin's will and built a small chapel in the wood near the pine. In 1487 the chapel was enclosed in the church that visitors can see today. The pine is supposed to be inside the main wall of the chapel.
