The salt path
The Salt Path 2024
After the summer, the re-enactment of the ancient Salt Path that joins the Via Romea Germanica to Rome and the Vatican returns.
The Salt Path has become a very important event among the initiatives dedicated to the tradition and salt of Cervia.
The route, which takes place along the Via Romea Germanica, includes 12 days of walking in 11 stages through the Apennines, to reach the destination and deliver the sweet salt of Cervia to Pope Francis.
Ancient traditions
The homage of Cervia Salt to the Pope began when Cardinal Pietro Barbo (later to become Pope Paul II) became bishop of Cervia in 1444. The cardinal had planned to send the salt to Pope Eugene IV (born Gabriele Condulmer, his uncle) to thank him for appointing him bishop of Cervia, then a rich diocese precisely because of its salt production.
The tradition was suspended in 1870, following the events of the Porta Pia breach, which interrupted diplomatic relations between the Vatican and the then young Kingdom of Italy.
In 2003, the ancient custom was resumed, thanks also to the interest of the Monsignor Mario Marini, Assistant Secretary of the Pontifical Ecclesia Dei Commission, and the salt was delivered to the Vatican.
Pilgrimage
It is possible to take part in the pilgrimage to Rome, which has also become a reason to visit the capital, with an organised trip to see the city and attend the salt delivery.
