Open day at the Cervia Vecchia excavations
ARCHAEOLOGICAL CERVIA
Open day at the archaeological excavations
In order to offer citizens and interested persons the opportunity to view and explain the activities carried out and the new findings from the excavation campaign, the Municipality of Cervia and the University of Bologna are organising free guided tours of the two archaeological sites: Cervia Vecchia and Prato della Rosa.
Excavations in the Cervia Vecchia area
Thursday 26th June
6 p.m.
The ancient city of Cervia stood in the heart of the salt-pans area. Abandoned during the 18th century due to the transfer of its inhabitants to the place where it still stands today, its remains have disappeared over time, leaving only faint traces.
For some years now, the University of Bologna has been carrying out excavations to rediscover the vestiges of the ancient settlement as part of a large-scale project to study and enhance the area.
The investigations began in 2019 with the reconnaissance of part of the municipal territory, leading to the identification of numerous previously unknown sites, highlighting the territory's great potential. In recent years, research has focused on the Cervia Vecchia site, in the centre of the Saline, where a series of exploratory archaeological surveys have been carried out to understand the state of conservation and depth of the archaeological remains and to study the topography of the ancient city.
Guided tour isin italian, free of charge
Duration of visit
The overall experience takes about 1.30 hours, including a 30-minute walk there and back.
The walk to the excavation area is on the banks of the salt pans, so it is an uncomfortable route and, unfortunately, not accessible to those with walking difficulties.
