Exhibition of St Martin's prope litus maris Mosaics
The mosaics of San Martino in prope litus maris
From discovery to restoration
From Saturday 1st to Sunday 30th June 2024
Cervia, Musa - Salt Museum, via Nazario Sauro 24
MUSA inaugurates an exhibition illustrating one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the city of Cervia, namely the church of San Martino prope litus maris.
The building, a 6th-century religious site of great size was located on the edge of the salt-pan area, and archaeological investigations have made it possible to reconstruct its floor plan and some of its special features. Part of the floor mosaics were on display at MUSA until the end of April and are currently being restored together with the other ‘tears’ that had not yet been reassembled since their discovery, although they were stored in the municipal warehouse.
An important project of the Superintendence, financed by the Ministry, allowed this further step and restorers are currently reassembling all the fragments found in the excavations.
All of the church's floor mosaics will once again be on display at MUSA in a new exhibition that will see the church as the protagonist of an entire wing of the museum.
Inauguration on Saturday 1st June at 9.00 p.m. in the presence of the Culture Councillor and the archaeological officer of the Ravenna Superintendency, Kevin Ferrari.
